The end of electronic slavery?

From the moment when one of the largest global vendors launched its smart phone with the modest green phone icon in the screen corner, the slogan «Voice calls are just another service» is penetrating deeper and deeper into our life. Indeed, the communications has become just a service; few people remember numbers of phones of their friends, since a modern smart phone can prompt them using the organizer, Skype or e-mail account. In such situations the phone number as a personal ID is becoming obsolete. Moreover, the phone number is used mostly for identification of the operator by its memorable prefix rather than the user. Nearly anyone has several numbers: a corporate one, a number for friends known from the school days, a number to control a bank account, etc.

But if we consider the phone calls as one of the communication services, why the subscriber's phone number itself cannot be used as another service? Why in the 21st century when the IP telephony program can be installed in a wink, a user has to visit an operator to get a piece of plastic for identification? Indeed, the SIM card contains a set of keys, digital data only! Why we cannot download them directly to the phone as software from the application store? What features make the SIM card indispensable?

There are several main problems related to ID keys in the cellular network:

— Security - The keys stolen from the SIM card allows for making its clone to access to the phone or Internet network on behalf of another subscriber and to use the pay services at his/her expense. Operators incur large losses from such frauds, and subscribers are involved in long and unpleasant proceedings to prove their innocence. As the result, both parties are interested in maximum level of key security, and the SIM card provides for it.

— Replacement of the device - The operator is interested to provide its services to the subscriber regardless of the device he/she uses, and the user wants to retain his/her number. The removable SIM card is an ideal solution.

— Convenient production and maintenance - The operator requires minimization of cost resulting in lower service rates for subscribers.

Bottom line -  To provide access of subscribers to communication network, operators and subscribers require a secure inexpensive device to store keys that allows a subscriber for changing his/her device… But why a SIM card hosts only a single phone number? And what about Wi-Fi networks and their keys, growing popularity of IP telephony and other services requiring keys stored now all over the place: in the e-mail, phone or on a napkin? In such situation the SIM card is of no use. There is a need of device for the most fast, secure and convenient access to various modern electronic services, rather than a simple instrument storing ID keys for mobile communications.

The search for answers to the above challenges resulted in UPRA (Unified Personal Resource Authorizer), a device storing not only a variety of mobile communications subscriber profiles, including all keys, the phone number, service access keys (i.e. full SIM card content). It also allows for secure storing Wi-Fi network and IP telephony keys, as well as keys for access to buildings or parking lots. Moreover, it provides for their secure usage, and that is of the most importance.

The device includes units for storing information about the user's SIM cards issued by different operators and allows for selecting any of them in automatic or manual mode with UPRA software. 512 SIMs will be enough? At the same time the device is nearly as small as the common SIM card!  While operating in the automatic mode, the smart software informs the user when he/she begins to communicate in the roaming mode, if a local SIM card is available to save voice traffic cost. Moreover, it can locate an accessible Wi-Fi network to pass all traffic through it, rather than through a mobile communications operator.

UPRA includes: 

— Memory ready to store all information on maximum available number of subscriber's SIM cards;

— Extra computing capacity - a separate processor controlling UPRA;

— Isolated storage locations for keys of Wi-Fi, IP telephony and other services;

— NFC antenna to the contact use of UPRA in addition to RF phone channel.

There are two options of the UPRA device:

UPRA-1: Super-Virtual-SIM, (Fig. 1). The device is inserted in the slot of common SIM cards replacing a standard SIM card in available phones and smart phones and allowing for selecting the operator in any time with a switcher's logic  subject to available rates, signal level, as well additional services usually unavailable within a single operator portfolio.  The keys can also be used with NFC antenna integrated in UPRA;

UPRA-2: Super-Phone-Service. UPRA is integrated in a mobile phone as a chip - a SIM card is not necessary. In this case, the phone functionalities are expanded subject to UPRA capabilities, including IP telephony, access to wireless networks, storage of personal and social network data. As the result, integration of the device into the phone enhances its consumer properties significantly.  For instance, the phone with the integrated UPRA chip automatically switches between IP and GSM channels.

If such device is installed in the phone, the subscriber's number is of no importance: the user is recognized according to his/her social network account, photos, the name in the e-mail address, rather that to ten digits of the serial number assigned by the operator. And the device uses the optimal number currently available. It makes no difference for your companion, whether you uses the cellular network or IP telephony. He/she will be simply glad to hear you. UPRA will help to select optimal rates, and it you can travel at ease without any concern of the roaming rates and searching for a local operator SIM card to call home.

An attentive reader can ask about loading his/her SIM card in UPRA, and we will answer that it is very simple, e.g. by air, but it will be another case…
