Talented people live in remote places! (part 5)

(Inventor’s sketches)

One day while I was flicking through my address book, I came across “Khrunichev factory, Andrei Romanov, mob…”. I had flashbacks from a tour around this “cosmic” factory, its large-scale production facilities, rocket bodies arranged in bays, piles of wiring and a swath of people in white lab coats with clipboards in their hands, quietly and diligently going about their work. This is the person I need to call to get an update on the space industry, and see if he had any spare hands to assist me with my small terrestrial matter. After our conversation, and once he had reviewed my “DO-RA” presentation, Andrei Romanov called me back and gave me a phone number. His parting words were: “Clever people can do anything and more..!”

Thinking that all my Christmases had come at once, I called the number, we met, I listened, I mulled it over and came to a decision: Let’s do it. The only snag was that the brains of my “DO-RA” project live in the Nuclear Center in the depths of Russia. Everything was tightly locked down there, so without a special pass you wouldn’t get anywhere. Although, oddly enough freedom of speech had even managed to penetrate into the classified depths of Russia. They had good mobile reception, the ubiquitous Skype and email. What more do you need for communications and objective setting!? So we set to work, despite the fact we were now in the middle of august, the time all Russians traditionally like to take their holidays. I went to the Black Sea in Crimea with my children and close relatives, while the guys at the Nuclear Center continued to graft away on my project with soldering irons and computer programs.

My two-week holiday flew by. Our geniuses from the depths set to work in good faith with military precision and without the need for any additional promises or money (required to motivate certain “creative groups”). Some of you will know the type of people I’m talking about. Intensive correspondence with my colleagues, the developers of the device, led to a workable set of technical specifications for the “DO-RA” and plenty of fresh ideas. I can’t believe how lucky I was to find these smart and committed people in the Russian back of beyond, especially given my ordeal in Moscow! Maybe I had unwittingly stepped into some sort of wormhole that whisked me to my destiny.

What a coincidence it was Knowledge Day in Russian when I returned to my beloved Moscow, having being exposed to a healthy dose of radiation from the Crimean sun and infused with a bouquet of Crimean wines. I met Aleksei Kibkalo in my office, the head of the expert team from the Nuclear Center, working on Project “DO-RA”. Before me stood a highly intelligent and wise man, with a Ph.D., he was also the recipient of countless awards and possessed numerous admirable personal qualities. After looking each other up and down, we understood we were on the same wavelength, and were both ready to work on the project no matter what it took.

As it happened, at the beginning of September I received an email from Skolkovo notifying me about their experts’ positive decision regarding my project. Apparently, all the Russian and foreign experts were quite excited after the Academic Council meeting. Skolkovo’s decision opened a whole range of new opportunities to develop the “DO-RA” project. I quickly created a legal entity to receive participant status in Skolkovo. Furthermore, Innograd offered fantastic tax benefits when working in research, experimental design, and the commercialization of inventions. I was on the up again! There was not a second to waste, so I gathered a team of friends and new partners to take part in project “DO-RA”. I collected a pile of documents including resumes, biographies and applications to send via the Skolkovo electronic portal for examination. However, as always, there was a catch in the conditions of being a Skolkovo resident! You must acquire a valuation for your intellectual product to convince the experts and Skolkovo Investment Committee that they’re not wasting their money. So I had to search for appraisers to value my intellectual property, in what is quite a new field for Russia. As luck would have it, Rosnano had already ordered intellectual product valuation methods and appraisal services from “Deloitte and Touche”, so I contacted them and they did just that!

To say that I was disappointed or surprised by the valuation of the product of my intellectual labors would be an understatement. I’ve seen a lot in my life, but I was shocked by this valuation!!!
