Journey to the Land of the Rising Sun. (part 9)

(Inventor’s sketches)

Sensei and I had long talked about my trip to Tokyo. During one of our Skype sessions, my Sensei asked how I saw his role in project “DO-RA”. Maybe, he began to doubt his future involvement in the project because he didn’t take part in the patent process. Given that our Globe is extremely large and there are still things on it available to share, I offered Sensei to become my partner in charge of monetizing my invention in that part of the land where my “DO-RA” utility model would be most useful, namely Japan. We agreed on this to our mutual satisfaction!

So there I was in a JAL airlines plane soaring over Moscow. Beneath the wing I could see our SLG Logistics center in full view bathed in the rays of the setting sun. The toy-like forests, houses and settlements on the outskirts of Moscow vanished into the distance. Farewell Moscow, hello Tokyo! I sat on the airplane like a foreigner in the Land of the Rising Sun. Japanese people surrounded me: pilots, stewardesses and passengers. I had a whole country full of Japanese people to look forward to, the thought of this sent shivers down my spine. Having wondered if there were any corners of the Earth Russians hadn’t reached… I started working on a computer presentation for project “DO-RA”. I wrote, read and rewrote things the whole flight. Beams of light from the Land of the Rising Sun shot into the plane so I was unable to sleep.

I stood in the queue at passport control cautiously looking around. I didn’t see a single European face. Suddenly, a pretty Japanese lady ran in a uniform ran up to me and said something in Japanese and then in English. I could only make out “Japanese passport?!” from the tongue twister she enunciated. Then without thinking twice I replied in broken English “I am have Russian passport”. She smiled and led me to another queue. Having survived passport control, I just needed to change my dollars into yen at the best rate possible, as my friends from Moscow had advised me. The exchange rate that day was 73.13 yen to the dollar. This exchange rate was already 70 to the dollar at the hotel. Without knowing how best to get around Tokyo, I took a taxi to the hotel. I lost 22,000 yen or around 300 dollars on a cab ride lasting only 45 minutes. The taxi wasn’t anything special by Moscow standards, definitely not worth the price I paid. On the plus side, I saved about 100 bucks on the transfer that the tour agency offered me there and back.

At last I reached the “New Otani” hotel, named after its founder and a personal friend of my Sensei. I was surrounded by Japanese people again, local staff, guests of the hotel of all ages and social statuses. My Sensei must have made a fuss before my arrival because I was given a gold hotel chain card while checking in, entitling me to bonuses and discounts on all the “New Otani’s” services, I just needed to work out in Japanese which one was which!”

Sensei and I met in my room later that evening. I showed him why I had come to this world of high technology. He was most impressed by the unassuming black box labeled “DO-RA” in perfect English! As well as the latest iPhone model “DO-RA” icon on the menu screen. Furthermore, this contraption comprising Apple’s flagship device and this crude prototype from the depths of Russia worked immaculately measuring the background radiation. As backup to avoid any possible hiccups, I brought a soldering iron and solder, a set of screwdrivers and a digital voltmeter. I had been using this collection of amateur radio enthusiast accessories since an early age. We fervently discussed our impending talks with directors of Japanese corporations and drank the beer that Sensei had brought. I was surprised by the name of the Japanese beer we were drinking, YEBISU, and couldn’t help but wonder why it wasn’t being sold in Russia?! The number of possible slogans that could promote this beer boggles the mind! The evening flew by; luckily we stopped with the strong drinks before we were too far-gone.
