Skolkovo Resident Receives International Patent in China

Intersoft Eurasia JSC, operator of the DO-RA project and resident of Skolkovo, has been issued with an international patent in China. An international PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) application for a utility model of the dosimeter-radiometer DO-RA was filed as early as May 7, 2011. In 2012, Intersoft Eurasia was already issued with an international patent that provides legal protection for DO-RA device in the territory of Ukraine.

It took the Chinese patent-issuing authorities 30 months to review the application, a process that also includes international search and preliminary examination, before issuing, on March 12, 2014,  a Chinese patent for a semiconductor-based utility model of the ionizing  dosimeter-radiometer DO-RA to inventor Vladimir Elin.

The main requirement for the issuance of a utility model patent is that the product must be innovative. A technical solution is considered original if no information about it can be found in publicly available sources of information dated before the date of filing of the patent application.

As a reminder, the engineering challenge behind the dosimeter-radiometer DO-RA utility model was to build a compact and efficient mobile device capable of measuring the level of ionizing radiation; storing and processing radiation parameters; monitoring  the radiation cleanness of the area,  including through image recording and record-keeping of geo coordinates and parameters of the source of ionizing radiation; and generating relevant data in an accessible format suitable for rapid response to instances of radioactive contamination.

Vladimir Elin (Ph. D.), inventor and head of the DO-RA project, said: "In today's world, a patent has long been regarded as a workable market instrument for building an efficient and secure enterprise. And given DO-RA's oversees marketing success potential, especially in Japan and  adjacent territories , I am very pleased that, in addition to the Russian and Ukrainian patents, we have also obtained a patent from China. For me personally and for the entire project team, it means a significant step forward towards the start of production and sales of our products in foreign markets."

Alexander Fertman, science director of the Skolkovo's Nuclear Technology Cluster, said: "It is a vibrant project whose strengths lie primarily in its leader. Vladimir Elin has put together a great team, which has done a lot to improve the device's cross-platform compatibility. The issuance of an international patent in China is yet another success of a talented team of developers and, simultaneously, a vindication of the directional choices made by them."

About the DO-RA project and Intersoft-Eurasia

Vladimir Elin's first thoughts regarding the development of DO-RA date back to March 29, 2011, after he finished working on an article titled Our Radioactive World. Vladimir Elin's first steps were to read several dosimeter and radiometer reviews on the Internet, buy a couple of domestic dosimeters and disassemble them for the purpose of closely examining their contents, and finally to do a patent search to ensure he wasn't going to create a copycat device.  It is when doing this that he realized how original his plan was. His study of the international patent database revealed that no other device capable of successfully combining the functions of a mobile phone with that of a dosimeter-radiometer existed anywhere. To be more precise, similar devices did exist, but they were very different from the concept which was ultimately used to build DO-RA and which later helped obtain a Russian patent for a mobile phone/smartphone-based dosimeter-radiometer. The fact that there were no analogous devices at the time of the patent search and patent application process only underscores the originality of DO-RA. Today, Vladimir Elin owns Russian patent No. 109625 and holds priority in respect of DO-RA utility model novelty and reproducibility. Priority is dated June 24, 2011. Applications for issuance of patents have been filed in the U.S., Japan, China, European Union and Ukraine.

DO-RA name is a contraction of the words dosimeter-radiometer, or DO-RA. The Russian and English spellings of the abbreviation are identical, meaning that the recognition of the name is improved.
